Prudence Crandall School was established during our huge growth in the 60's and named in honor of Prudence Crandall, a courageous and pioneering educator. Prudence Crandall, born in 1803, was an American schoolteacher known for her groundbreaking efforts to provide education to African American girls during a time of deep racial segregation and prejudice.

In 1831, Prudence Crandall opened a school in Canterbury, Connecticut, specifically for young African American women. This decision challenged the societal norms of the era and faced intense opposition and hostility from local residents. Despite the resistance, Prudence Crandall remained steadfast in her commitment to providing education to these girls, understanding the immense value of knowledge and empowerment.

The school in Canterbury, which later became known as the Prudence Crandall School, attracted students from various parts of the country, and its reputation spread nationwide. However, the racial tension and discrimination escalated, leading to legal battles and attempts to shut down the school. In 1834, due to mounting pressure and harassment, the school was forced to close.
